What makes a Chanel style jacket so distinctive?

Boxy shape.

The Chanel jacket shape is iconic - boxy yet soft, with an almost cardigan like fit suitable for any occasion.

Textured fabric - often Linton Tweeds brand.

The traditional textured fabric often includes interesting and unusual fibres. If its a plain fabric it's not just a flat weave but has a superb 'nubby' softness. If a check or plaid fabric is chosen then you will see great skill in the pattern matching process.

Fabulous trim, braid or fringe.

There is always some really fabulous trim or fringe, something that defines the jacket edges and gives a nod to a military style. Generally this is seen along the outer edge including around the neckline, at the cuffs and even on the pockets if there are any.

Buttons

The buttons will be bold and flashy, and make a real statement. Fastening these exceptional buttons will be hand sewn buttonholes created in three separate stages. The weighty buttons are balanced with a metal chain sewn at the back hem. Definitely a winning combination of style and practical ingenuity.

Distinctive construction

The construction of a Chanel jacket is different from a standard ladies tailored jacket, with many hand sewn elements. With no tweed facing pieces the lining is a mirror image of the outer jacket, and the two layers are held together with lines of quilting stitches. It is this attention to detail that enables the distinctive soft tweedy fabric to create tailoring of the utmost quality and yet of comfort and wearability.

Who is Philippa Naylor?

Philippa is best known in the sewing world as a quilt maker and teacher, having won many international prizes for her quilts and being a sought after teacher.

But long before she started making quilts, Philippa worked as a clothing designer in the British clothing industry and then had a business creating bespoke evening wear and wedding dresses. In fact she credits the skills she learned making couture garments with her success as a quilter.

Having spent two years developing a popular series of on-line quilting classes, she has returned to her first love of garment making.

Working from her Yorkshire Studio, which she shares with sculptor husband Peter, Philippa has created a series of on-line garment making lessons with the goal of helping everyone make "beautifully crafted, well fitting, individual clothes that you will love to wear."

"I have learned so much from the three classes so far. It is wonderful to have something that actually fits and looks great. "

Patricia

"I have not stopped smiling whilst watching this class 😊 I am so excited to have found my sewjo "

Wendy

"I’ve made quite a few garments over many years but I’ve learnt so much in this class and kept thinking “I wish I’d known that before I’d made such and such garment” 😂😂"
